The Marketing Metrics Small Businesses Should Track — and the Ones to Ignore
A simple measurement approach that ties marketing activity to enquiries, sales conversations and revenue.
A large follower count can be encouraging, but it does not tell a business owner whether marketing is working. Start with the measures that reveal whether the right people are finding you and moving closer to a conversation.
Track the path to a qualified enquiry
Measure relevant traffic, enquiries, qualified conversations, proposals and wins. Then ask which pages, articles or campaigns influenced those steps. This creates a small chain of evidence instead of one isolated vanity number.
Use leading and lagging signals
An enquiry is a lagging signal. Content engagement, newsletter sign-ups and service-page visits can be leading signals. Look at both: one tells you what happened, while the other tells you whether demand may be building.
Ignore metrics that do not change a decision
If a number will not change what you do next week, it probably does not belong in the main report. A short weekly review with a clear decision is more useful than a large dashboard no one uses.
